Welcome to Helsinki, Hanasaari

On behalf of the organizers we have a great pleasure to welcome you to the symposium Molecular background of tolerance and autoimmunity!

We feel that there are very good reasons to arrange this kind of meeting just now in Finland! Our country has strong research traditions in the field of common polygenic autoimmune diseases like diabetes type I, multiple sclerosis and rheuma. Furthermore, the occurence of diabetes type I and multiple sclerosis is particularly high in certain regions of Finland. Recent genomewide studies have proven the unique advantage of the utilization of  the Finnish population for pinpointing the genetic backgrounds of polygenic diseases. APECED is a monogenic autoimmune disease which was found and clinically described in Finland. Recent studies have shown that the APECED-gene AIRE is a central molecular regulator in the development of immune system, particularly for the function of normal self tolerance. This has been a breakthrough discovery and has stimulated a lot of intensive new research activity, which has greatly improved our understanding of tolerance and autoimmune phenomena. Thus we feel that it is most adequate time to invite the scientists and students interested in tolerance and autoimmune research to discuss the findings and vision the future of the field.

As the speakers we have invited distinguished researchers in the field of immunological tolerance and autoimmunity (see Program). As participants we invite researchers and students in the field as well as all interested in autoimmune diseases.

We look forward to meeting you in Finland and in Hanasaari!
